Below is a curated list of the best things to do in Rio de Janeiro, blending the must-see tourist spots with the authentic experiences that locals cherish. Ready?

Best things to do in Rio de Janeiro

Trust me, as a Brazilian with a deep love for this city, this is the one and only guide you need to plan an epic trip to Rio. If you want these tips integrated to your Google Maps, get our personalized map. In this guide I compiled enough things to do in Rio de Janeiro to fill a week or more. But if prefer to look at a more curated itinerary suggestion for a 3 to 5 days trip, you’ll find it in my Ebook – Bespoke-ish travel plan for Rio de Janeiro.

1. Ride the Cable Car to Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugarloaf Mountain, or Pão de Açúcar, offers the most spectacular views of Rio. From its summit, you’ll take in a 360-degree panorama of the city’s dazzling coastline, from Praia Vermelha and Copacabana to the sprawling bay of Guanabara, framed by the silhouette of Christ the Redeemer in the distance. I will never get tired of it, no matter how many times I visit.

I recommend visiting Sugarloaf in the afternoon to catch the sunset, as this is Rio at its most magical time of the dat. Head to Clássico Sunset Bar around 4 p.m. for a drink and the most beautiful views. On Fridays and Saturdays, a DJs set the mood from 14h30 to 18h00 at Urca (intermediate stop to get to Sugarloaf). It’s a fantastic thing to do if you’re in Rio on a weekend!

I recommend booking the ticket in advance to avoid queues. Book it here!

2. Relax on Ipanema and Leblon Beaches

I have traveled far and wide and can confidently say Ipanema is one of the top beaches in the world. The atmosphere is vibrant, and the backdrop of mountains rising behind the coastline is simply unmatched. While the water here is usually dark, if you’re lucky enough to visit on one of the crystal-clear water days, as we were, you’ll no doubt fall in love with this beach and with Rio itself.

You should know that Rio’s beaches are divided into sections called “postos”. Each posto attracts a different crowd, giving you the chance to find your perfect spot. It’s such a unique part of Carioca beach culture. Posto 9 in Ipanema is considered the best, frequented by beautiful people and socialites, while Posto 8 is popular with the LGBTQIA+ community. For a more relaxed, upscale vibe, head to Postos 10 and 11 near Leblon, where the scene is posher and quieter. No matter where you set up on the sand, you’ll be surrounded by the essence of Rio’s beach culture, with plenty of caipirinhas within arm’s reach.

For a touch of indulgence, grab a spot at Clássico Beach Club, where you can enjoy delicious food, cocktails, and bounce between beach and club all day long.

3. Try Biscoito Globo + Mate com Limão in Ipanema

When you’re lounging on Ipanema Beach, make sure to try two local favorites: Biscoito Globo and mate com limão. Biscoito Globo is a light, crispy snack that pairs perfectly with mate, a refreshing iced tea with a squeeze of lime. This classic beach combo is sold by vendors strolling along the sand and is a true taste of Rio’s beach culture. Whether you’re relaxing under an umbrella or watching the surfers, this snack will make you feel like a true Carioca.

4. Visit Christ the Redeemer

No visit to Rio is complete without seeing Christ the Redeemer. This iconic statue, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, towers over the city, offering views that will take your breath away. We got up in the first tram and it was super packed, so I don’t recommend. Somewhere around 8:30 to 9 a.m is a sweet spot between early risers and photographers and the bulk of tourists arriving from 10 a.m onwards. Standing beneath the statue with Rio sprawling out below is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience.

Book your tickets closer to the day you plan to visit the Christ, as you want to ensure good weather and clear skies. Get your tickets here

5. Wine and Dine with a view

Rio de Janeiro’s dining scene pairs incredible food with stunning views. For a serene lunch, head to Terra Brasilis by Praia Vermelha, where you’ll enjoy front-row views of Sugarloaf Mountain in a relaxed, picturesque setting. Bahian classics like moqueca make the meal unforgettable, and the peaceful vibe feels like a hidden escape. Book in advance to secure the best table and fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery.

For sunset and city views, Clássico Sunset Urca atop Sugarloaf Mountain is unbeatable, with cocktails and laid-back vibes. For a more urban, sophisticated setting, Xian Lounge offers panoramic views of Guanabara Bay. If you’re after lush greenery, Aprazível in Santa Teresa provides garden dining with sweeping vistas of Rio’s hills, while Parque Lage invites you to brunch at the foot of Christ the Redeemer, surrounded by colonial charm and tropical beauty.

6. Brunch at Café Colombo in Copacabana

Café Colombo, one of Rio’s most traditional coffee spots, has a tropical outpost right on Copacabana Beach. I definitely recommend planning for a brunch at Cafeteria Colombo, overlooking the waters of Copacabana and indulging in pastries, fresh juices, and Brazilian coffee as you gaze out over the waves and Sugarloaf Mountain.

The café’s relaxed yet elegant vibe makes it a perfect way to start your day in Rio. You do need to pay a small entry fee (10 reais) to access the military compound where it’s located but trust me – it’s worth every penny. Enjoy!

7. Discover Rio’s Historic Downtown

Rio’s old town is full of history, culture, and stunning architecture. Yet, most visitors overlook this authentic area, but you won’t be one of them. Start your exploration at the futuristic Museu do Amanhã, an architectural marvel, then make your way to the Royal Portuguese Reading Room, an awe-inspiring library straight out of a fairy tale. It’s hard to believe you’re not in Europe when you step into this library. Don’t miss the Metropolitan Cathedral, with its modernist design and impressive stained-glass windows. For a more traditional stop, visit the original Café Colombo, where you can experience a piece of Rio’s old-world charm with a cup of coffee or an afternoon pastry.

This itinerary is perfect for a morning of exploring Rio’s cultural heart before heading to Lapa and Santa Teresa. While Lapa’s famous arches are a beautiful piece of architecture, I found the area a bit unsafe to walk around on foot, so I’d recommend caution if you plan to visit. Instead, from downtown, I’d recommend taking an Uber to Escadaria Selarón, the famous tiled staircase. It’s a vibrant must-see but resist the temptation to walk from there up to Santa Teres – locals told me that pickpockets are common, and it’s best to travel by car for safety.

8. Explore Santa Teresa

After exploring the city center, you can board the magical yellow tram leading to Santa Teresa. This is one of the most bohemian and historical areas in Rio de Janeiro and is best experienced by riding the traditional yellow tram through the winding streets of this hillside neighborhood. Once there, stop by Armazém São Thiago, a family-owned bodega where the atmosphere is as delightful as the food. We loved the croquettes and even more chatting with the owner, who is the 3rd generation running the establishment. For dinner, head to Aprazível for authentic Brazilian cuisine, authentic drinks and a spectacular view over the city. To finish the day, you can even head to a samba party!

A great way to explore the area is joining a group tour. Book yours in advance!

9. Join a samba party

For an authentic taste of Rio’s samba scene, I highly recommend Pedra do Sal. Some say this historic spot is where samba was born, though, as a native of Bahia, my home state! Regardless, it’s an incredible place to experience a vibrant street samba party taking place on Fridays and Mondays. The energy is contagious, with locals and visitors alike gathering to dance and sing under the stars—it’s one of those quintessential Rio experiences that you won’t want to miss.

Another personal favorite is Rio Scenarium. This place was one of the highlights of my trip. It has a charming old-school samba vibe, with fantastic live bands and a crowd that’s always in the mood to dance. You can grab a table for some drinks and food, but when the music kicks in, it’s hard to resist hitting the dance floor. Another well recommended samba place in Lapa is Beco do Rato. These options offer perfect mix of great atmosphere, lively samba rhythms, and a fun night out. In my opinion, definitely a must-do for anyone visiting Rio!

10. Watch the sunrise at Mirante Dona Marta

Even if you’re not naturally an early riser, setting your alarm to catch the sunrise at Mirante Dona Marta is absolutely worth it. Watching the city of Rio slowly come to life as the sun colors the sky and illuminates Guanabara Bay is an unforgettable experience. The view from this vantage point—Christ the Redeemer towering above and the city sprawling below – is truly breathtaking, and it’s the perfect spot for epic sunrise photos. You can visit on your own, taking an Uber or taxi to the viewpoint and arranging for the driver to wait, as it can be tricky to find transportation early in the morning.

Alternatively, consider booking a private tour or joining a guided group tourfor convenience. Trust me, this is one of those moments in Rio you won’t forget.

11. Praia Vermelha: A Local’s Beach

Praia Vermelha, nestled at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain, is one of Rio’s lesser-known beaches. Surrounded by military compounds, it’s a quiet, safe spot frequented mostly by locals. It’ll give you a glimpse of carioca lifestyle. If you don’t mind being salty, you can spend most of the day at Praia Vermelha and explore the Sugarloaf Mountain in the afternoon, staying for sunset. An amazing way of spending a day in Rio!

12. Breakfast or Drinks at the Copacabana Palace

The Belmond Copacabana Palace is an institution in Rio and a must-visit, even if you’re not staying there. It’s possible to enjoy a luxurious breakfast or a drink by the pool at this legendary hotel as a visitor. The Palace’s elegant ambiance and historic charm are reason enough to stop by, and the setting makes for a perfect start or end to your day.

13. Explore Parque Lage

Parque Lage is a must-see for anyone visiting Rio. The grand colonial mansion, now home to an arts school and café, sits at the base of Corcovado Mountain with the Christ the Redeemer looming above. The surrounding gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll, and brunch at Plage Café within the mansion’s courtyard is a serene way to take in the magical atmosphere. If you’re visiting Christ the Redeemer in the early morning, this is a perfect nearby stop.

14. Helicopter Tour During Sunset

One of the most breathtaking experiences in Rio is taking a helicopter tour at sunset. Flying over the city and seeing Christ the Redeemer from above, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, with Rio’s dramatic geography as the backdrop, is truly unforgettable. You’ll get an unparalleled view of the city’s famous beaches, the lush mountains, and the glittering Guanabara Bay. While it’s not the cheapest activity, it’s more affordable than you might think and absolutely worth the splurge for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Check prices and book here!

15. Stroll or Bike Around Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas

Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas is one of Rio’s most picturesque spots, and it’s a favorite among locals for outdoor activities. Whether you’re in the mood for a relaxed bike ride or a leisurely stroll, the path around the lagoon offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the city skyline. It’s particularly lively in the mornings and late afternoons as locals run, row, and sail on the lagoon, making it a vibrant hotspot as the sun begins to set.

Along the way, you’ll find a few charming restaurants and bars to stop at and enjoy the scenery. Don’t miss a visit to the Farm Rio House, a stylish flagship store that’s perfect for picking up some trendy local fashion while taking in the laid-back vibe of the Lagoa. This and other great shopping spots are tagged on our personalized Google Map!

16. Sunset at Mureta da Urca

For a truly local experience, head to Mureta da Urca to watch the sunset. This low stone wall along the edge of Guanabara Bay is a favorite gathering spot for locals who come to enjoy the view, a cold beer, and the peaceful atmosphere. From here, you’ll have a fantastic view of Sugarloaf Mountain and the boats bobbing in the bay. I think it’s the perfect spot to wind down after a busy day of sightseeing, with the evening colors reflecting on the water and Rio’s skyline in the distance. You can even grab food and drinks from the restaurant in front of the wall – Boteco Mureta da Urca.

17. Bike from Leme to Leblon

For active travelers, biking along Rio’s stunning urban coastline is a must. Rent a bike using Itau app and pedal from Leme through Copacabana and Ipanema, finishing in Leblon. This route takes you past some of Rio’s most famous beaches and offers unbeatable views of the ocean and surrounding mountains. It’s a great way to get some exercise while soaking in the beauty of the city. Along the way, stop for a refreshing coconut water at a beachfront kiosk or a quick dip in the sea – it’s the perfect combination of fitness and fun!

18. Join an epic boat tour

We planned to join a sailing boat tour around Guanabara Bay but got sick and had to cancel. Still, I think this tour is a fantastic way to take in Rio’s beauty from a new perspective. As you glide past the city’s iconic landmarks, you’ll stop to admire Niterói’s architectural masterpieces designed by Oscar Niemeyer, including the futuristic Museum of Contemporary Art. The views of Rio’s skyline from the water are breathtaking, and there’s something truly magical about seeing the city from the bay, especially as the sun sets over the horizon.

19. Hiking in Rio de Janeiro

For adventurous travelers, Rio de Janeiro offers a variety of breathtaking hikes that lead to stunning viewpoints. The top 5 trails include Pedra Bonita, a relatively easy 40-minute hike offering views of Pedra da Gávea and the Zona Sul beaches; Morro Dois Irmãos, which provides a panoramic look at Rio’s southern zone and the iconic Christ the Redeemer; and the Instagram-famous Pedra do Telégrafo in Barra de Guaratiba, known for its dramatic photo ops. For beginners, Parque da Catacumba offers a relaxing hike around Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, and the Morro da Urca trail is a great option for those who want to enjoy views of Sugarloaf Mountain along the way. Just make sure to hire a guide or join a group, to ensure you’ll be safe!

20. Indulge in Brazilian Cuisine

I may be biased as a Brazilian, but there’s something truly special about Brazilian food. And I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t love it! Rio de Janeiro is a paradise for foodies, offering countless authentic and vibrant restaurants to explore. Start with the classic combo of beans, rice, and a protein like steak or chicken, a staple in Brazilian cuisine. If you’re a meat lover, don’t miss a churrasco, where skewers of perfectly grilled meats are served at your table in endless rounds. For snacks, treat yourself to coxinhas (crispy chicken croquettes), pão de queijo (cheese bread), empadas, and pastéis (fried pastries filled with meat or cheese). And no Brazilian meal is complete without dessert—try brigadeiros, Brazil’s irresistible chocolate truffles. The culinary flavors of Rio will stay with you long after your trip ends.

22. Shop Brazilian Brands

Brazilian fashion and beauty brands are world-renowned, and Rio is the perfect place to pick up some local treasures. Havaianas flip-flops are a must, offering comfort and style for your beach days. Farm Rio is a personal favorite vibrant clothing brand that captures the colorful spirit of Brazil, while Granado offers luxurious soaps and skincare products with a rich history. For swimwear, I recommend checking Cia Marítima and Lenny Niemeyer, two brands known for their stylish beachwear. And for a sustainable, minimalist wardrobe, Osklen offers chic, eco-friendly fashion that’s distinctly Brazilian. I adore these brands and I’m sure you’ll too!

23. Get a Taste of Carnival

Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival is world-famous, drawing visitors from across the globe to witness the largest party on the planet. But you don’t have to visit during the official Carnival season to get a taste of its magic. One of the best things to do in Rio is to take a behind-the-scenes Carnival tour, where you’ll explore the bustling warehouses that house the dazzling costumes, floats, and props used in the parades. The scale of the preparations is incredible, and you’ll be amazed by the artistry and dedication involved in bringing this spectacle to life.

As Carnival approaches, samba schools host rehearsals that are incredibly fun to attend. You can witness the energy and excitement building up to the big event. Keep an eye on the schedules for these lively rehearsals, where you can truly feel the Carnival spirit in the air.
